Question and Answers: Rulings for Working as Soldier

Question:
There are many of the soldiers-to-be that have a good religious awareness felt troubled because they should listen to the music of the infantries. What should they do since listening to this music is a must for them?
Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen answered:

There is no doubt that music, whether that one exists inside the military world or other is among the mishaps that afflict men these days. Music has became a part of many people’s activities. Undoubtedly, this is a foolishness or a dismissive attitude towards the shari’a, or merely going along other’s ways. Some scholars allowed the existence of musical instruments, reasoning that the hadith that forbids the musical instruments that is written inside the shahih of Bukhari- is a weak hadith, because there is a discontinuation in it’s chain of narration. Among those scholars was Ibn Hazm, and some contemporary scholars such as Yusuf Qardhawi, etc.
Some people might adopt this weak opinion, thinking that there is a strong reason in it. But we believe that the musical instruments are unlawful, whether the ones used in military works or others. It is a must for the muslims to feel satisfy with whatever that Allah has legalized for them and to leave whatever He forbids them.
Courage is not enhanced by music. What causes a heart to be brave is it’s remembering of Allah. Allah declared,
“Believers! When you encounter a host in battle, stand firm and remember Allah much that you may triumph.” (QS. Al Anfal: 45).
This is what fills the hearts with courage.
In summary, those who dislike the existence of musical instruments, are the ones who will get rewards from Allah due to their dislikes. If they are able to diminish it, or minimize it’s effect, then they should do it.
If they are unable to do anything, then they should not sacrifice the great benefits of having pious men in military world, due to the smaller-effect danger compared to the benefits. We are responsible to weight over the benefits and the danger.
Because if those pious men left such occupation, that is being a soldier, to avoid such wickedness in it, then it will be occupied by the evil men. I believe you understand the threatening danger if the military is occupied by other than pious men. I don’t want to mention the example of how, when the evil men ruled the military, they would also take over the throne of the country, then it will be followed by horrible damages and wickedness that prevailed the country.
Thus, I particularly urge those who have firm commitment with their religion to be a soldier and for them to seek help from Allah to mend the mendable affairs. The music, in my opinion, is undoubtedly a wickedness even though there is a different opinions regarding this matter as I’ve said previously, but I reiterate that such wickedness is smaller compared to the great benefits that could be achieved if the leadership in military world is taken by the pious men who understand their religion.
