What to do if my money is mixed with income from gambling?
Question:There is a man who committed evil doings in the past, then he wishes to repent. But his wealth is mixed with unlawful wealth, particularly money from lottery and from other sources. What should he do?
Answered by Shaikh Mashur Hasan as Salman:
Lottery is a form of gambling. The man must spend some money in charity equal to the amount he got from lottery. It is compulsory for him to do so whenever he is capable, although he spend it gradually, until it reaches the amount he must spend. If he do so, I wish that the sins will be erased from him.
Whereas if he ever took other people’s money wrongfully, he must ask for those people’s apology or pay them back as soon as he is able to do so.
As for transgression in forms of tricking the measures, false vow, and forging; those were his sins to Allah. He must increase his righteous deeds, alms, and spend that unlawful money in social activities until he run out of it. If now he is incapable to do it, and he has a strong will to settle his financial obligation, insha Allah he is still in goodness and he is obliged to pay those who can pay these days.
