The Improper Supplication
We know that praying or supplicating is among the matter of worships that Allah and His messenger has taught us. Supplications we’ve recited, whether about the worldly or after world matters, are our soul needs, but there is a matter in which our supplication to get it becomes a very disgraced one.It is when we supplicated to obtain worldly pleasures alone and ruled out the pleasures in the Hereafter realm.
فَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا وَمَا لَهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خَلَاقٍ (200)
“And when you have performed your rites remember Allah as you
remember your fathers; or remember Him even more. There are some (among
those that remember Allah) who say: “Our Lord, grant us what is good in
this world;” such shall have no share in the Hereafter.” [QS al Baqarah:200].In this verse, Allah disgraced those who supplicated to get only the worldly pleasures and beg for nothing concerning the religious matters.
Disgrace to these people who only asked for worldly pleasures encompassed two things:
First, asking for the worldly pleasures in spoken manner, such as asking for an ability to pass school exams, a job, abundant of sustenances, luxurious car, sumptuous house, etc.
Second, asking for the worldly pleasures by attitude. It means that literally the person asked for worldly pleasures as well as the Hereafter. But the condition of his heart when he supplicated to Allah to get the world was in contrast with the condition when he asked for the pleasures in the Hereafter.
When he supplicated to Allah to get the worldly pleasures, he supplicated in a very serious manner, focused, and full of concentration. What he said was in accordance with what his heart wished for.
It was different with his condition when he supplicated to ask for the pleasures in the after world, and sought protection from the torments in it, he was totally unfocused and paid no concentration thus what he said was different with what his heart wanted. His tongue asked for the Paradise, while his heart wandered at his store, his paddy field, or his cattle.
The two attitudes above are the kind of supplicating to get worldly pleasures that is disgraced and reprehensible in shari’a.
