How a Muslim Encountering the Calamity
All praises be to Allah, peace and prayer of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
Dear brother! Say:
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِى فِى مُصِيبَتِى وَأَخْلِفْ لِى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا
“‘To Allah we belong and unto Him is our return. O Allah,
recompense me for my affliction and replace it for me with something
better.’Our country is again afflicted with calamity. Our muslim brothers are again tried with some hardships. The earthquake once again destroyed the houses, buildings, and killed some of our brothers and wounded some others.
Don’t be down! Keep your kind thoughts of Allah the Exalted, and be tough. Trust me, that if you are tough in going through this calamity, without lamenting, and keep your kind thoughts of this fate, Allah will show you the best solvency to us and our country. Even better, Not only the best solvency, but also this calamity might turn to be pleasures.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوفْ وَالْجُوعِ
وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الأَمَوَالِ وَالأنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ وَبَشِّرِ
الصَّابِرِينَ {155} الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُواْ
إِنَّا لِلّهِ وَإِنَّـا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعونَ {156} أُولَـئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ
صَلَوَاتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ وَأُولَـئِكَ هُمُ الْمُهْتَدُونَ .
البقرة 155-157
“We shall certainly test you by afflicting you with fear, hunger,
loss of properties and lives and fruits. Give glad tidings, then, to
those who remain patient; those who when any affliction smites them,
they say: “Verily, we belong to Allah, and it is to Him that we are
destined to return.” Upon them will be the blessings and mercy of their
Lord, and it is they who are rightly guided.” (Qs. Al Baqarah/The Cow: 155-157)Brother! Umm Salama -may Allah be pleased with her- said, “I’ve ever heard the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said, “Whoever afflicted with calamity, and said:
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِى فِى مُصِيبَتِى وَأَخْلِفْ لِى خَيْرًا مِنْهَا
“Allah will grant him rewards in that calamity and replace for
him a better one than what he lost.” And when my husband, Abu Salama
died, I uttered the prayer, as taught by the Messenger of Allah -peace
and prayer of Allah be upon him- and in fact, Allah replaced for me one
who was better than Abu Salama, that is the Messenger of Allah -peace
and prayer of Allah be upon him-.” (Narrated by Al Bukhari)It is true that after the waiting time for a widow of Umm Salama passed, the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- sent someone to propose to Umm Salama to be his wife.
Allah The Almighty! What a better replacement, and even no one is better than him. What a grace, to be honored as the spouse and soulmate of the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- during his lifetime on earth.
And after that, to be honored as his wife in Paradise, in Allah’s side. She, Umm Salama -may Allah be pleased with her- truly got a true happiness in this world and in the Hereafter.
And if you asked: “If so, then what probably we get as a change for what afflicted us today, of damaged houses, shattered properties, wounded and dead families?”
Don’t worry, Brother! Allah has prepared for you a greater substitute, if you are true in your patience in facing and going through this calamity. Do you want to know, what has been prepared for you? Here’s the answer from the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- :
أُمَّتِى هَذِهِ أُمَّةٌ مَرْحُومَةٌ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهَا
عَذَابٌ فِى الآخِرَةِ عَذَابُهَا فِى الدُّنْيَا الْفِتَنُ وَالزَّلاَزِلُ
وَالْقَتْلُ. رواه أحمد وأبو داود وصححه الحاكم ووافقه الألباني
“My followers are a blessed nation, they will not be tortured in
the Hereafter, and their tortures will only be in this world, in the
forms of turmoil, earthquake, and bloodshed that afflicted them.” (Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and classed valid by Al Hakim and confirmed by Al Albani).Brother! The ever coming and going calamities that afflicted our country are the retribution for various wickedness that afflicted it recently, from pornography, porn activities, usury, unlawful drugs, abandonment of zakat, and consuming the unlawful wealth.
You might say, “Why are you so pessimistic and suspecting to your own society and country?”
Brother! Know that I’m not merely suspecting nor being pessimistic over the fate of my own people and country. I’d like to you to compare our country’s condition 20 years ago with it’s current condition. The differences are great, right?
Although my heart was hurt, and tortured to see and hear the grim news over and over again, but I believe I still see the light of hopes that come along the rising sun on every morning.
Since even though the wickedness and evils have spread almost thoroughly in this country, but Allah the Exalted is still willing to accept the retribution from us, in forms of those natural disasters.
If only Allah the Exalted had closed the door of hopes of our country, He certainly will postpone all of these disasters until the Hour set, and desert us tortured in His Hellfire. Is this what you wish our country to be?
This is among the wisdoms that we might infer from the attitude of the Prophet -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- who always praised Allah, even amidst hardships.
‘Aisha -may Allah be pleased with her- revealed: The Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- used to say, when he got something that pleased him:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِى بِنِعْمَتِهِ تَتِمُّ الصَّالِحَاتُ
“All praises be to Allah, Who, realize all goodness with His graces.”And when he got something that displeased him:
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَى كُلِّ حَالٍ
“All praises be to Allah upon everything.” (Narrated by Ibn Maja, Al Hakim, and classed as valid by Al Albani)
Hopefully, this cascade of disasters and calamities will spark the spirit within your souls to striving in pioneering the changes we all wish. Only by your striving, our country will be prosperous and blessed with graces, provisions, and peace.
ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّ اللّهَ لَمْ يَكُ مُغَيِّرًا نِّعْمَةً
أَنْعَمَهَا عَلَى قَوْمٍ حَتَّى يُغَيِّرُواْ مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ وَأَنَّ
اللّهَ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ. الأنفال 53
“This happened because Allah is not one to change the favor which
He has bestowed upon a people until they have changed their attitude.
Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.” (Qs. Al Anfaal: 53)And the Messenger of Allah -peace and prayer of Allah be upon him- said:
إِنَّ النَّاسَ إِذَا رَأَوُا الْمُنْكَرَ لاَ
يُغَيِّرُونَهُ أَوْشَكَ أَنْ يَعُمَّهُمُ اللَّهُ بِعِقَابِهِ. رواه أحمد
وابن ماجة وصححه الألباني
“Surely, if people know that there is a wickedness among them,
but they don’t change it (to goodness, -ed), then Before long, Allah
will inflict punishment upon them all.” (Narrated by Ahmad, Ibn Maja, and classed valid by Al Albani).Dear Brother! The key to your country’s change is in your hand, so how and when will you use that key thus your country will transform into a prosperous and peaceful country?
This is time, to enjoin the goods and prevent the evils, therefore the disaster and calamity that for so long has troubled this country will go away.
